There is a tree growing by my fence. It has horizontal lines all across the bark. Its leaves look kind of like a pear tree. There is one planted in the yard behind mines. But there is also another kind of tree that the next door neighbors have in there front yard (some kind of ornamental i think) and it also has the horizontal lines that go across it. The thing with pear trees is they usually have upright branches and this tree next to my fence has only horizontal branches. Please advise.
Follow-Up Postings:

Prunus have particularly noticeable horizontal lines e.g. cherry and plum, not pear.

Your tree looks a lot like the wild black cherry trees that grow here in Virginia. Matthew

It is definitely a wild black cherry just as backyardgardener says. No doubt about it.

BTW...I should mention that planting a sweet cherry seed from store bought fruit will often result in precisely the same tree. I've done this twice and have a virtual clone of your tree in my backyard, right next to a wild black cherry in a neighbors field and they are both absolutely identical in every regard, bark, foliage, flowers, branch angles and structure and even the fruit is identical in size, color, set, and even flavor.

Appleseed, were you disappointed with your seed grown cherries, or did they turn out similar to your expectations. I myself don’t dislike the flavor of wild cherries, but I think I would have been a bit disappointed. Matthew

I didn't really grow them with any expectations of any kind. As far as the flavor goes, to me, they are awful. To the birds they must be like caviar, they don't even wait for many of them to ripen...just eat them while still green. I've thought about grafting it over, but for some reason which I do not understand, I hear it's difficult. I think I read that sour cherry will graft, but sweet cherries are usually rejected. I find that hard to believe, but I've heard it so often from different sources I'm thinking maybe there is something to it.

| I agree with you that wild cherry don’t taste great, they are bitter and mostly pit. At least you didn’t expect much from your cherries, I am trying not to expect much from my seed grown pears, and apple, but at least if the fruit they produce is undeniable, it should be fairly easy to graft to them. | Yeah...I have seedling apples here I grew and are already grafted. For some reason I've not considered pear...although I should since so many pears are sold on seedling rootstock anyway. I think growing an apple from seed then grafting it over to something nice is maybe the most long lasting and rewarding gardening experience one could have. |
