RE: stark brothers peach trees

I planted 4 Stark Bros. peach/nectarine trees this season. 3 of them were nothing but 3/8-1/2 whips with one of the nectarines being 3/4-1 inch.

Out of the 3 whips 2 grew right out of the gate. Right now after cutting them off at knee high they have since almost tripled in height and are about 2-3 feet wide. The third of the whips didn't have any growth until about one month ago (planted in April). It has since grown only 1 foot and not very wide. The larger caliper tree had ZERO top growth and only sprouted from one bud about 1-1.5 inches above the graft union. It has since grown to about 3 feet tall.

But to answer your question.. no since they all came with zero branching there were no flowers this year.

I planted 3 varieties in March from Stark Bros. (July Elberta, White Giant, and Elberta Queen). My experiences were very similar to Sean2280. The trees arrived as very skinny whips, with little to no branching. They all initially leafed out in the spring. The July Elberta and White Giant have since grown quite well, and the July Elberta has gotten particularly large and full, but neither put out any blooms. The Elberta Queen just died shortly after leafing out and never got much larger. Have no idea what happened to it. I yanked it a few weeks ago and planted another variety called La Feliciana from a local nursery. I can take some pictures of the two from Starks and post them if you like.

And, this is the Early White Giant. It has recently started to defoliate some. Not quite sure why yet. Lemme know what you think of them.

My PF24 from Starks on June 2nd...

The PF24 on june 18th... Notice the extreme bow in the trunk... the first pic doesn't show it as well because of the angle, but it was quite severe. The tree was shipped to me at about 4-5ft tall.. If I would have planted it like it was shipped the top of the trunk would have been pretty darn close to 90 degrees to the ground.. it was that bent. I took it out of the box and it sprung down and nearly hit me in the arm.

And the PF24 on the 16th of this month.

Very nice trees, thanks for sharing. Its amazing how much yours have grown since June. It seems you have some good fertile dirt in those raised beds. I hope you called and complained about that crooked tree. Surely they had better stock than that they could have sent. By the way, sorry my pictures are sideways. They show up correctly on the iPad which I posted them from, but on my laptop they are rotated. Have you got plans to plant any more trees?

RE: stark brothers peach trees

Lol... the crooked tree worked itself out. That top half (24+ inches) didn't really sprout much (if anything.. i can't remember) but I lopped it off. So it only sits about 18-20 inches above the ground and that part isn't that crooked.

The soil I am using is 2 parts top soil, 1 part compost manure, 1.5 parts Tree & Shrub soil. It seems pretty fertile. No compacting, breaks apart easily, weeds LOVE it, etc. I also use a lot of organic fertilizer. One of the best I have found has been Kelp Meal. I also think the Bat Guano I used helped.

Plant more trees?? I'll toss out a few more pictures and let you know what I have going on :) These are my raised beds for peaches/nectarines. The complete circle on the left is nectarines, the other 2 have peaches. This picture was taken April 29th. The trees in red didn't make it and have since been replaced. various vendors.

I'll see if today or tomorrow I can't get you a picture of my "storage row" of various plums, pluots, apricots, apriums, and plumcots. But here is a picture of my Nectaplum. Again started off this year as a stick with zero branching. This picture was taken about 3 weeks ago.
