Hi, I'm interested in trying to grow a seckel pair espalier in the Northern Virginia area against a fence. Can I plant now or should I wait until Spring? Also, I was planning to graft a branch or 2 of another variety (or 2?) onto the tree for pollinating and was wondering what others would suggest as good pears to tack on. Would a Dana Hovey work or is that too close to the Seckel? I'd like the look of the 2 to be somewhat of a match in terms of leaf size, etc. Unfortunately I don't think I have room to grow a whole separate tree. Thanks.

As far as the Dana hovey pear pollination goes (Seckel is listed as a viable pollinator)

I planted a Moonglow "friend" next to my Seckel.. November 2010, planted 2 Bartlett-type, a Seckel & MoonGlow. This Spring I got the 1st flowers. No fruit set. Hopefully next year. In comparison to all my other pomes or stone fruit trees which all flowered and produced something by the 2nd year, the pears are fruitless so far. The trees are handsome and vigorous, but slow. I am understanding that this is common.
