Magnolia Vine Berries

My 2nd year plant yielded about 20 berries. I made tea. What a strange fruit. Tastes medicinal. One of the 50 essential herbs in Chinese medicine. Called the 5 flavor fruit. Salty, sweet, sour, pungent (spicy), and bitter.
Used in Russia a lot. Full of goodness for the body. Nothing I ever tasted taste like these berries. The tea was good. Eating them raw not so good. But what a unique flavor. I dried the berries and made tea, it was good! I'm sick so the hot liquid with the medicinal taste seemed proper. Anyway I'm keeping it and hopefully will get better production next year. The plant is small, just planted last year.

Drew51 new fruit vines sound extremely productive for the second year. Did they come from Gurneys? They sound like a pleasure to grow!

I don't remember where I got it? It's Eastern Prince. Which is what you want as it has a perfect flower. With others you'll need a male and female for fruit. I noticed today I missed a few berries.

I got my Eastern Prince from One Green World. No fruits yet but mine has been potted while I wait to get the landscaping done. It's finally done now so I can plant it:)

Clark, send me a PM

I think I got mine there too, It's a pretty easy plant to grow. I'm growing it on a fence. Planted spring of 2013.
I missed about 15 berries, hey I'm sick! (I have a terrible cold) I put them in enough water for 2 cups, used a potato masher to break them apart. Boiled for three minutes. Strained out seeds and pulp with a fine strainer. Tastes the same as yesterday. I thought it would be a year before I had another cup! A pleasant surprise! Making tea is the way to go with these berries. Somewhat euphoric, a feeling of calm and well being after drinking it.
