Gala Vs Grand Gala apples from Starkbros nursery.

Grand Gala clearly came out a big winner. Both with the same sweetness, crispy, Juicy, but the Grand Gala almost twice as big.

If that difference is really all due to variety, then the bigger apple probably isn't really a Gala sport but another similar apple.

Grand Gala is a larger version of Stark Royal Gala apple.

Yes, but does it taste like a Gala?

In the northeast I don't find this apple any more distinctive than Red Delicious. I'm guessing it's a better apple elsewhere because it doesn't get dissed the way RD does.

Sure is a grower friendly tree.

I don't consider large size a virtue in itself. If the Purdue site is right and it has other virtues such as crispness, very well.

I can't stand the Galas sold in stores. They've soured me so much on the flavor I refuse to plant a Gala. Maybe home-grown Galas are much better than store-bought, but I'll probably never plant one to know for sure.

Store bought Fuji, Pink Lady, and Honeycrisp are much better. I don't grow any of them except Fuji, which has been in the ground at least 5 years and hasn't fruited yet.
