When to collect paw paw seeds for planting

I have access to a couple of paw paw trees. One has a fair number of unripe fruits (3-4" long) on the tree with a number of smaller fruit (1-2" long) having fallen on the ground. I would like to try germinating the seeds again. Do you think the seeds from these smaller fruit will be mature and viable or should I just wait for the ones on the tree to ripen and collect those seeds when they do?

Are the fruit on the ground ripe? If so, the seeds should be viable. If the fruit dropped prematurely, it's possible that the seeds are not viable.
