 o
Santa Rosa plum & CA drought

I have a Santa Rosa that's always been a big producer. This year, although it blossomed, I have no fruit, probably because I didn't irrigate during our long dry spell. All the leaves turned brown prematurely. About 3 weeks ago I deep watered it and now it's starting to leaf out with new growth. I'm afraid I've confused the poor tree. At the time of year when it should start to lose leaves, it's acting like it's spring. We probably have a couple more months of warm, if not hot, weather. Have I messed up my harvest for next year?

Probably not. Next years harvest may depend more on our strange weather patterns than your watering now. Let it leaf out to it's little hearts content but keep an eye out for rogue blooms and pinch them off if/when you see them. Keep it watered one a week or two till it goes dormant or we get some rain and nature takes over watering duties. The brown leaves may have been from the lack of water or possibly from the heat also. You should see the tree covered in blooms next spring. Be sure to keep it well watered (But not overwatered) from spring through the dry season next year.

Wow! Thanks for your detailed answer, Fireball. I appreciate it!

You are welcome. Pay no attention to the rogue bloom remark I made earlier. Pinching them off is for apple, quince, and pear trees that are susceptible to fire blight in the fall. I had a refresher last night on the subject. Plum isn't included.
