Searched on that and didn't turn up anything though I know I've read some threads on the topic. Just picked a bushel of Golden Delicious and have another bushel to go. Also have some Enterprise ready to harvest. Both varieties have the smutty surface fungus on them. I have a fridge I can get some of them in, but I was wondering if I should just put them in the cold or try to clean/disinfect before doing that. How to maximize storage life? Chuck
Follow-Up Postings:

Chuck: For GD keep the humidity up. I just put several dozen in my fridge. I put them in a plastic bag that's nearly fully sealed to keep up humidity and avoid shriveling.

Most apples seem to do best with cold temperatures and high humidity. There are stories about people burying Golden Russet in the ground back in the day in October or November and digging them up in the spring so they don't shrivel. I have noticed the shriveling aspect. We seem to be getting so much hotter every year that I don't know if it will be cool enough by the time the apples are harvested. I may need to start growing later harvesting apples. John S PDX OR

Thanks for the link milehighgirl. So...wow..axel was eating good Macintosh in February? Hard to believe since simple refrigeration is lucky to keep them a month off the tree for me. I guess there is a wide variance to what folks still find to be acceptable. I know if one of those doomsday preppers were looking for a good storing apple, Mac would be imo one of the very worst choices they could make.
