We just moved into a house that has an actively fruiting lime tree about 10' tall. We want to keep it, but can't keep it in its location since a permanent building will go in its spot. Is it possible to move it and, if so, how do we go about it? My husband is suggesting a backhoe to lift as much of the dirt and roots as possible. Suggestions? Thank you.

Tree spade best way move small tree but very costly. You may want try move with backhoe bigger bucket hoe better. Most landscape nurseries have are no tree mover.

On a tree that big it may be iffy. But who knows since so few try. I'd move during cool cloudy weather if possible. Take as big a rootball as you can and keep well watered after the move. I'd bet it will be OK but may need pruning of the top if there is some die back. In fact you might want to prune some before the move.
