Why did Gala apple trees lose their leaves early?

In browsing a small local nursery on Sept 8th, I noticed that their potted Gala apple trees (approx 6' tall) had already lost all their leaves, while all their other apple trees still had green leaves. Any idea what could have caused this? I bought a couple of items from the nursery and they said they'd throw in one of the Galas for free if I wanted (I happened to be looking for one to add to my mini orchard). I did take one. Other than being bare-leafed it seems to be fine... the roots are healthy, not particularly pot bound, no sign of disease or insect damage, and there are new buds showing next year's potential. Am I crazy to be such a gambler?

(Ps. There was only one person working at the nursery while I was there, who was friendly and eager but obviously still learning about fruit trees. The owner/specialist was not available to answer any of our questions.)
