Sick Fig Tree

I don't know what kind of fig tree it is; it is my mother's tree.

The leaves curl inward, turn yellow, die and fall off.

One problem could be that the fertilizer spikes were placed up against the trunk of the tree, not 30 or more inches away, as is recommended. The spikes were planted in the soil about two months ago. However, the problem with the leaves started before the fertilizer was applied. Anyone have any idea of what the problem might be, and how to correct it?

No more spikes near or far. There are better ways to fertilize. Your tree could just be too dry. Where do you live and what is the soil/watering situation?

"The leaves curl inward, turn yellow, die and fall off."

This is what my figs do before they go dormant. I same some leaves doing this now in early Sept.

However you say this started two months ago which is early to for going dormant, although I don't know where you are.
