| Hey Lou- You sent me scions from the tree your Dad grafted over sometime in the fifties or sixties, and also started grafting yourself. As I recall you had moved from that house but were able to get access to the tree. I grafted your scions to my tree. That was in 2007, so it took seven years for it to fruit for me. (You also sent me a disk on whip and tongue grafting which was really useful to me, and which I passed on.) It's a dern good pear. I only got a couple, so I can't speak to storage, but the ones I did get held their own when compared to other pears. I liked the flavor and delicate perfumey quality. It was very juicy, only slightly gritty. Blushed noticeably and had a classic piriform shape. The tag I made for the tree calls it the Joe Pezzuti Pennsylvania Wonder and I imagine that your Dad would be pleased with it. Sorry to hear that the other trees didn't make it; I hope it wasn't fireblight that did them in My basic tree is a Gold Spice grafted onto OHxF something, so that's what your scion is growing off of. Thanks again for your cuttings- I just think it's a really neat thing to see these treasures kept going and shared. It was great to hear from you again and to bring this full circle. Mark |
