Fruit ID

Could anyone tell me what this fruit is? Is it some type of crabapple? The squirrels use my yard as their feeding grounds, bringing things from other yards over. I have little ones and dogs and just want to make sure it wouldn't be harmful if one of them got ahold of it.

You can see the bits of acorns for size reference. Zone 5, Indianapolis

Looks like some sort of wasp gall to me. You sure its a fruit?

Holy poo. No, I'm not sure it's a fruit. I picked it up and felt it. It felt like a fruit. And then I chucked it back where it was for the squirrels to finish eating.

Yes - looks like an oak gall, aka oak apple, to me too. There are acorn cups and oak leaves around it implying this is under an oak tree.

Here is a link that might be useful: Oak apples

It is, indeed, under an oak. Dumb question (even dumber than the original)-- are there wasps inside? Or would they have left it when it fell?

Cut er open and see if there are seeds in there or some insect.
