what's eating my apples?

This spring we were delighted to see our first apples growing on our dwarf macintosh/macoun trees. Sadly by the end of July all the apples had disappeared without a trace! Any thoughts on what could steal an apple without leaving the core etc behind?

Squirrels are the likely culprits.
Asserting your dominance on your property will be the only way to keep them out.

Shoot to kill, or trap to relocate.
I had them in my attic last year, so I have an extra motivation to thin the herd.

Squirrels want to go eat the apple in a safer spot up a larger tree. When they are eating peaches I can find where they are doing the munching by the pile of seeds below.
