Large Jujube Tree

I see a lot of people plant jujube trees as close as 10 feet or closer. Is that too close? I think a lot of places say the trees can grow to 30 feet.

I have seen a large jujube tree in Dallas, TX. I believe it is about 40 to 50 feet tall, as wide. It is taller than two story house. It is in the middle of my friend backyard and the tree shades the entire backyard.

My friend invited us to come to clean the backyard. They do not eat the fruits and the sedlings come out from everywhere. They even think about cutting it down because of the mess.

I do not know what variety it is. The fruit is medium size, about the size of a dollar coin. We only got the ripe fruits dropped from the tree. The fruit is sweet, but I have tasted sweeter fruit.

I have no idea how old the tree is. It could be an American type jujube since jujube was not popular many years ago.

I don't think there are American varieties. They all came from Asia. A good bet would be Li or Lang. Those have been the common varieties sold by nurseries since I've read about them.

The fruit is smaller than Li, and it is not pear shaped like Lang. The shape is like Sugar Cane, but bigger. It is just hard to imagine such a large jujube tree like that.

RE: Large Jujube Tree

Some articles say the largest jujube tree in the us is in ft worth at the botanical gardens, 40'. Your friends tree may set a us record!

I planted 5 trees at a 7 ft spacing; they seem to be more columnar than normal, they're trying to avoid each other. I cut them back pretty hard ea year, I could easily see this getting out of hand if I missed a year or 2.

I also have a contorted so, which was 16 ft tall and 16 ft wide a year ago. I cut it back to 10x10, but now it's 16x16 again.

The more columnar trees, like Li & Sugar Cane, might be ok at 10' spacing

I'd like to see the tree if it can be arranged. Bobhawkins695@gmail.com
