Calville Blanc outgrowing root stock

Hello.
I'm hoping some of you can tell me if this is at all common.

This tree has been growing in our orchard three seasons.

There was no noticeable difference in caliper when we planted it, but as you can see from the photos, it is really out growing the root stock. It is about eight feet high, and if this trend continues may snap off at some point.

I've read about using root stocks, planted around the tree and grafted into the bark above a girdled area, and plan on trying that to strengthen this tree.

Advice or suggestions anyone?

Could this sort of thing happen if I grafted a vigorous variety onto one of my young trees?

I've seen that when grafting Flemish Beauty to a Bartlett on unknown (probably seedling) rootstock. The tree in question is ten years old or more and seems to have come into balance and is healthy and vigorous and productive both on the lower (Bartlett) and the upper (FB) side.

But your tree looks pretty dramatic to me- might be worrisome.

You might want to stake it for now using an 8-10' length of metal conduit. If it doesn't snap off I expect it will eventually strengthen up. What is the root stock?

I've had worse than that with sweet cherry on Giesla rootstocks. The scion more than twice the diameter of rootstock. It didn't seem to hurt production.
