Experience with European plum varieties?

I was wondering if anyone has experience with and can provide some comparison (or other evaluation) of a few European plums:

The Burbank plum 'Pearl'
'Imperial Epineuse'
'd'Agen'
'Rosy Gage'

Any information about the relative fruit qualities, tree character, etc. would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Of the ones you mention, I've only grown Rosy Gage. It's a good plum. Took a while to get going, but very productive. Like other gage type plums, the fruit ripens over a very long period of time.

It's bigger than a Green Gage plum, but not as big as some of the large Japanese plums (like what you see in the store). It's not quite a good as Green Gage, but it's still good.

I have no idea how it would perform in zone 9.

I have Imperial Epineuse planted, but it hasn't fruited yet. I've heard some good things about it.

Of those mentioned, I've only managed and tasted Imperial E. and it is a wonderful tasting European plum in the "prune" class. I believe in northeast conditions that it is somewhat difficult to grow because of susceptibility to brown rot and light cropping, but this info is probably not useful to you. It is a plum still widely propagated for home orchards, at least.

If you are in CA, I think Dave Wilson nursery has the best info for you concerning stone fruit varieties and that most of the best ones are going to be available from their outlets, unless you already have an wide range of varieties growing and are looking for more unusual types to explore further.

Here's an interesting description of Pearl from the classic "Plums of NY". The author considers it world class in flavor and subpar in performance, but this is in east coast conditions and it may be fine in the west.

Interestingly, I found a farm that grows Pearl in northeast PA and sells it at various farm markets in that state, so they presumably get decent production out of it, even in our conditions.

The review on its exceptional flavor by the author of Pof NY has me wanting to obtain some wood.

Thanks for the helpful thoughts, Harvestman.

Here is a link that might be useful: Southmeadow lists 'Pearl' in its catalog.

I would advise that you be cautious about patronizing Southmeadow. They are notorious for sending trees not true to label last I checked. Make sure they have a decent "Garden Watchdog" rating. Maybe they are under new ownership, but such news hasn't reached me.

I know of a wonderful rose nursery run by great folks, and I bet their fruit trees are excellent. I'm going to order from them (I have ordered roses before).

They have Pearl :)
