Can I plant blueberries now?

I live in southern New Jersey, near Philadelphia (Zone 6B). The weather here is in the mid-70s during the day and low-to-mid-50s at night. Can I plant a blueberry bush now, or would it be better to wait until it gets a little colder?

I'd plant it now. Cooler isn't going to be an advantage. The warmer soil should let it root down some this fall. That's an advantage as I'd see things.

Plant, mulch, and water to keep it moist until the leaves fall.

Thanks for your help. I thought you weren't supposed to plant in warm temperatures. That's why I was told not to plant in the summer. Is that false?

If we get a run of really warm weather, your blueberry shrub, recently planted, might develop flowers. That would be hard on the shrub, because the roots are not yet settled in and up to speed, that is, they are not ready to support a flowering shrub. However, I don't think this scenario is very likely, either in Wisconsin, where I live, or in New Jersey. You could wait until October 15 to plant your shrub, if you want to be more conservative. For reasons that I do not claim to understand, transplant blueberry shrubs will sometimes develop more leaves and flowers than the roots can support. It seems that root development is relatively slow, compared to leaves and flowers. Since these shrubs do not normally flower in the fall, fall is a good time for planting them.

This isn't summer and the temperatures you posted reflect that fact. 70s aren't too hot too plant and it will be cooler soon. Keep it watered but not drown and it will be fine.

Ericwi,

Thanks for explaining the problem with planting in warm weather. We had some 80 degree days last week, but not this week, and the 10-day forecast doesn't predict any days over 75 degrees, so I agree that the scenario you describe is unlikely. I plan to plant them this weekend. Thanks!

Hi,

Also just planted fall shipment blueberry 1 week ago. Soil is 50% peat + 50% potting soil + soil acidifier (espoma).

When can I start to apply ammonium sulfate (1 teaspoon per gallon) to the new plants? Is there any benefit to do it before winter?

Thank you

Alex

Alex:

You don't want to push new growth this late in the yr. If the plant is green and still growing I won't fertilize this fall. If it looks anemic and light green apply nitrogen once or twice but no more until spring.
