| I have two areas of trees. One is in my vegetable garden and are set up as a Tall Spindle and get watered by my drip hoses attached to the garden. and the other is some dwarf and two semi dwarf apple trees. The free standing trees only got watered by me once this summer and seem to do well and had a good crop even though we had a very dry summer is this usual for trees once they get established with a good root system or do I need to worry about watering them more in the future. I'm just thinking about the future and maybe setting up a drip system for them. |

| You are in MA and had a "very dry" summer? If it's close enough and easy enough to get drip irrigation there...why not? I know the pipe and emitters are so cheap they're almost free. As you know dwarf trees need supplemental water in the worst conditions. I know weather can vary a lot in different areas (even across small distances), however looking at USDA's MA drought map it looks like although surprisingly dry in some areas it wasn't all that bad. When it gets to the red or burgundy then you'll have issues like fruitnut and other folks in the southwest. Then you might need to water the dwarfs. Here's the map mentioned: |
