Good news for Fig fans in Zone 5A.

All my fig trees died to the ground from the -15F this past winter and re-sprout this spring. Usually the fruits will not ripen on the died back year but my figs broke the rule and ripened for me.

Do you have yrs when they don't freeze back? Mine have frozen back 10 yrs running. Makes me wonder just what this zone thing means.

Steve
I wrapped my fig trees and stuffed with dried leaves. They survived most winters except for the last one.

Tony,
I know it's only 5 degrees difference between your zone and mine on average so this post gives me hope we will get some figs next year. My fig which I believe will produce next year is 3 years old.

Here is a link that might be useful: Hardiness Zones

Don't feel bad Tony. I'm in zone 8(SC) and had a brown turkey die back last winter, and all of my figs are in the ground. We actually had snow twice, lol
Luckily it came back with a lot of help from diluted urine.
Great stuff!!

One yr I did leaves, carpet, more leaves, and then a tarp. I couldn't tell any difference compared to the uncovered plants. This yr I'm going to start with 4-8 layers of frost blanket depending on temperature. If they survive moderate frost with that I'll add more below 20F. Still may not be enough as these plants are young, new, and greener than any other yr at this time.
