Golden Delicious apple skin black smudges

Hello. I am wondering what specific problem is causing black smudge marks on the skins of my Golden Delicious apples here in Ohio.

I am a VERY casual home gardener with an over-busy lifestyle. But I do love the apples from the 2 trees in my yard (1 Golden Delicious, and 1 Red Delicious). In the last 2 years I have neglected my pruning and spraying duties. But frankly, we typically get so many fruits from these trees, that we can keep just the small percentage of pretty apples for our own use, and feed the rest to deer and wildlife. But this year the pesky black smudge marks which we see each year have gotten much worse; nearly turning the apples black.

Check out this thread about 6 posts below yours right now.

Here is a link that might be useful: sooty blotch

Thanks, fruitnut.
Actually I had seen that thread about "Sooty Blotch," but I must admit that I am much too ignorant of terminology in apple diseases and conditions. I got the impression from one post in that "Sooty Blotch" could be wiped or polished off of the apple skin, like some kind of powdery mildew-like stuff. The black splotches on my Gold Delicious apples are within the skin itself, and cannot be removed by washing, etc. Is there a place with accurate descriptions of the terms I have been reading about in that thread?
Thanks again.

I re-posted this photo and question in that other thread. If the mods want to remove this post, I will understand. But I sure would like to find a good source of photos which would describe diseases and conditions of apples.

That is sooty blotch. Get a scrubby and it will scrub off.

Lump,

How about Google apple diseases and there will be a lot of
info for you to read. The websites done by university extensions are usually good sources.

I attached Penn State Extension here for you to check it out.

It can definitely come off. Here's a pic from earlier tonight of 2 Goldrush apples. Both fell off the tree this morning. My parents were over and prefer clean looking fruit (either way is fine with me), so my dad scrubbed one for a minute (on the left). Before he started, it looked very similar to the one on the right.
