Here is a link that might be useful: sooty blotch

Thanks, fruitnut. Actually I had seen that thread about "Sooty Blotch," but I must admit that I am much too ignorant of terminology in apple diseases and conditions. I got the impression from one post in that "Sooty Blotch" could be wiped or polished off of the apple skin, like some kind of powdery mildew-like stuff. The black splotches on my Gold Delicious apples are within the skin itself, and cannot be removed by washing, etc. Is there a place with accurate descriptions of the terms I have been reading about in that thread? Thanks again.

I re-posted this photo and question in that other thread. If the mods want to remove this post, I will understand. But I sure would like to find a good source of photos which would describe diseases and conditions of apples.

That is sooty blotch. Get a scrubby and it will scrub off. Scott

It can definitely come off. Here's a pic from earlier tonight of 2 Goldrush apples. Both fell off the tree this morning. My parents were over and prefer clean looking fruit (either way is fine with me), so my dad scrubbed one for a minute (on the left). Before he started, it looked very similar to the one on the right.
