I have a shinko and a hosui that are tall and whip-like. They tend to grow up instead of out. You will have side branches grow without topping. If you want a more spreadout tree you can use limb spreaders to get a more bushy tree.

Would the side branches come out from the same locations the old branches were at? Or they would come from other places?

I do not like to cut the tree down to 4-5' level. And I do not want a long whip either. I want a fuller tree, not a bushy tree.

there is a trick others here have used. After it buds out in the spring, cut through the cambium right above a bud you want to branch out. It does not take severe damage, just a knife cut.

This is the tree. There are many spurs at the main trunk. I do not know if the tree can develop good scaffolds if the main trunk is not pruned.
