Doing our first year of apple storage. Making applesauce out of most of the apples, but we have a couple hundred honeycrisps that we put ziploc baggies over this past spring for organic growing. And they turned out to be amazing apples. We want to be eating these all winter! Question: How should we store them? I've heard about wrapping apples in paper, but before I do that I should ask - Can they just store in the baggies? And what temperatures are best?

I store mine in a spare freezer. I use a brewing thermostat that disconnects the power when the temp drops below 32, and turns it on when it reaches 38. You need to put a piece of cardboard or foam against the cooling elements to avoid freeze burns on the apples touching it. beyond that, you can store them without bags, with paper bags, or with plastic bags. I only have Northern Spy and Arkansas Black, and they both store well, the former into February (they run out by then), the second into May.

I store in baggies, not zipped tight shut. It keeps them from shriveling.
|
I store in polyethelene bread bags, tied tight, and held as close as possible to 31-32 F. Seems to actually be closer to 34 F. Keeps all but the worst keepers into spring and even Liberty into March.

I always leave my bagged apples in the bags. It does help.
