I just bought a heritage raspberry this year and it grew like crazy and got quite a few berries, but now it is done getting fruit. I want to prune it to get 2 crops next year. I had some canes that produced fruit this year and some that did not. I am confused as to which ones to prune and how much. also when is the best time to prune? Zone 6. Thanks for the help!

Heritage is fall bearing, I believe. We also have fall-bearing red raspberries, here in Madison, which is now zone 5. Our raspberry patch is located in an area that has morning sun, and partial shade in the afternoon. Also, we have sticky clay soil, with pH around 7.6. I mulch the raspberry patch heavily with shredded tree leaves in the fall, and water during drought conditions. In the fall all of the canes are pruned down to about 8 inches. I leave enough standing so I can see where the canes are located, and avoid stepping on them. Some people mow them to the ground, and this seems to work well, also. The raspberries grow vigorously in this location. They begin to flower in July, and we will see ripe fruit in late July and then more heavily in August. Our canes are currently loaded with fruit, although the berries are not quite as sweet in October. If your raspberry patch is not too vigorous, you might consider some sort of fertilizer. I have not found this to be necessary, yet.

Heritage is considered ever-bearing and can indeed be pruned in such a way to induce fruiting either once or twice a year. I could walk you through it, but I'll give you the link instead as it has some good info in it about raspberry culture in general. I ordered heritage but got subbed Latham. It's been an extremely productive patch and is considered summer-bearing, but I can usually squeeze a small fall crop out of it as well.
