We are hoping for recommendations as we convert our lawn to an edible garden here in Northern Minnesota, in zone 3b. We plan to plant cherries this spring. In researching varieties, we found a lot of folks are dismayed over the profuse suckering of the Evans Bali Cherry. Now we are looking at the Romance series of cherries out of Saskatchewan. We're considering Romeo, Crimson Passion and Juliet (thought haven't found Juliet here in the US yet.) Also looking at Carmine Jewel. Wondering what recommendations anyone might have for growing fresh eating/pie cherries in zone 3b. Thanks!

I can only tell you about carmine jewel because that is the only one of the above mentioned I have a lot of experience with. Carmine Jewel are very good overall because of a combination of reasons which are they do not sucker, they are easy to care for, grow moderately fast, they produce a fair crop of cherries in 3-4 years, they are short and easy to pick (6' or so), drought and wet weather tolerant, fruit taste is as good or better than most tart cherries, fruit size is acceptable, and they are cold and heat tolerant.

I wouldn't give up on the Evans,..most vigor and best producer! Found out that suckering is not a issue for the first 10 years. Bali had them grafted at one time,..perhaps that's the way to go for you.

Northwoods: Bailey Nursery in St .Paul MN does Evans. Where I work, Ditto for 'Sweet Cherry Pie'. Originally my experience with this variety over 20 years ago was that it suckers profusely Of course I have also heard that Evans own root is a good

>>Ditto for 'Sweet Cherry Pie'.<< No sweet cherries,..these are all sour cherries.
|
I have all the romance series cherries, so far the only one that has not sent up any suckers is the crimson passion. cupid and valentine appear to be the worst. Carmine jewel has only sent up one maybe two. Glenn
