I grafted 5-6 Douglas pears this year so I'm hopeful they are a good variety. A fellow grafter traded me some scion wood and they really took off. Seckel pears were also very hardy and doing extremely well on callery rootstock.I have a few other new varieties of pears I grafted this year. Curious if anyone grows the Douglas?
Follow-Up Postings:

I found a few old posts about them that indicated they are very resistant to Fireblight and taste similar to Bartlett. They also mentioned they fruit fairly quickly. Do they have a downside and if they don't why is no one I know growing them?

I planted one this spring. So far so good. Supposed to be precocious. May taste similar to kieffer. Well see!
|
As with Kieffer, ayers, Clara frijs, and Seckel to name a few my goal is to graft my pear varieties for the most part over to Fireblight resistant types. I will always keep a couple around that are not Fireblight resistant as well because of their flavor .
