whats wrong with my cherimoya seedlings?

Hi all,

So I was able to get two cherimoya seeds to germinate and now they are both about 4-6" tall and have anywhere from 5-8 leaves. I've had them a while and they don't grow nearly as fast as what people say on the other forums. I've given them a decent sized pot to grow in too I think.. about a one gallon container? When I transplanted them last (and they're not much bigger now than they were then), their roots were rather short and didn't branch out. The tallest tree though, all of the leaves are pointing downward, like they're folded. I got fertilizer from a friend who gets it special ordered from OC and his plant is huge (and bore fruit without hand pollination). I made sure that I fertilized only the outer rim and not too much.

I don't know what to do. I live in an apartment in LA and they probably only get 6 hours of sunlight a day. I'm even bringing them into this little greenhouse at night so they don't get too cold. I'm trying to baby them but have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If someone could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it!!!

If the leaves are drooping, then there is a root problem. The weather is getting cooler now so don't expect much growth till spring. Do not overwater and don't fertilize until growth resumes.

I was told not to use a fertilizer that has too much nitrogen, and so I have been putting ash from my barbecue on mine instead. I have mine in a wine barrel planter because I have poor soil, but I may put it in the ground later. It does not need to go into a greenhouse in the winter in SoCal. Mine has five or six fruit on it now, but they were all hand pollinated. My leaves have always somewhat drooped, and I think it is not a particularly attractive tree - I'm only growing it for the fruit. Mine gets full sun, however, and I think if anything, your problem may be that it is not getting enough light, especially now that the days are shorter.

It's difficult to get information on this tree, but a nursery that sells the trees may be helpful. I bought my at San Gabriel Nursery in San Gabriel - quite a distance from where I live, but at least they had the inventory. I even got help regarding the tree from other customers at the nursery when they saw me buying the tree.

Never use ash from the BBQ, FAQ over on the Soil & Compost forum says to avoid charcoal and its ash because of the chemical additives. It says don't even add it to your compost pile.
