The late John H Gordon, who operated a nut tree nursery, catering to growers in northern locations, in Amherst NY, had this description on his website:
Juglans ailantifolia var. mandchurica; Covel Manchurian is a vast improvement over typical Japanese walnuts, and native butternuts ( J. cinerea ), considering cracking, hull removal, and sharp spines. Though the kernel of Covel is tight in the half-shell, it is not keyed in. Its flavor and production are tops, so we suffer with a medium hard shell, suture which is too long to always crack all the suture, and having to wiggle the kernel from the half-shell to get it out whole. Covel's tree, or Heartnut trees, looks like spreading butternut trees, but with little butternut bark and root disease.

I have two heartnuts, one big enough to start producing if the other weren't too small to pollinate yet. They are said to be very hardy as well, and the nut should be easier to shell out than the Juglans mandshurica, if the Wikipedia description is correct. Is there a reason you are going with Juglans mandshurica?

thanks guys

heartnuts don't seem to be quite as hardy as Manchurian walnuts, from what little data I can find. all I've read also states that the taste is better. the tree it self seems rareish, and some sources state that it doesn't produce alone of jugalone. also heartnut seeds aren't available yet, these guys were!
