Anyone try the Etter apples?

Hi. Has anyone ever tried any of the apples sold by Greenmantle Nursery? They've got some interesting red/pink fleshed and crab hybrids that I'd like to try. Rubaiyat, Pink Parfait, and Muscat de Venus are the ones I'm most interested in, can anyone comment on them, or any of the others? And does anyone have any experience with that nursery? From what I've read, survival rates on their benchgrafts aren't too hot, and it seems they make you sign some sort of non-propagative agreement (which I'm sure makes a nice paper airplane after you've got your apple). I guess I could always pick up other similar Etter apples, Wickson and Pink Pearl (or a descendant of Pink Pearl), from Trees of Antiquity, but the Greenmantle ones seem so unique. I'd really like to get some opinions from someone who's tasted the apples. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Wickson seems to be outstanding wherever its grown; I wish I had a seedling-size tree of it, as I bet it makes killer cider. Dave Wilson started carrying another one, but I forgot which variety. Applenut

Ok, one vote for the one that's easy to get and probably won't die. I should probably go with it and a few others from TOA, but still, does anyone have thoughts on the Greenmantle exclusives? Thanks.

I ordered two benchgrafts from them which died so I never got to try them out. Wickson is regarded as the best, but it would indeed be interesting to try some of the other ones. Scott

I think Dave Wilson's Etter is Pink Pearl, which I bought this summer. No apples yet--maybe next year! Carla in Sac

I ordered one of the pink-fleshed apples from them a couple of years ago--I can't remember which one offhand, but it was a bench graft and it died over its first winter. The Jonathon lived, as did another good northern stalwart. I did less well with the pear bench grafts, which died from the root.

My personal favorites are Waltana, pink pearl and hidden rose. Waltana is an amazing apple, one of my favorite all around apple. Save your money, though, from what I've heard across the board, greenmantle can't graft worth beans. I've heard many reports of failed grafts. Also, the apples are not patented, so if you didn't sign a non propagation agreement, it's legal for you to propagate greenmantle apples, provided you can find scion wood. Pretty much all the varieties show up at our local scion wood exchanges.

I got Hidden Rose and Scarlett Surprise from One Green World. They also have Pink Pearl. They haven't fruited for me yet so I have no opinion on taste.
