Ground Cherry turning translucent

Hello,
I am growing Aunt Molly ground cherries and gotten a small yield of ripe fruit, but there's still a good amount of unripe ones still on the plant. Today I've discovered that some of them have gone from green to white\sort of translucent and the husk looks like it's disintegrating.
The nights are getting into the low 40's and I'm wondering if that is what's causing this. They've normally gone from green to yellow and then either I pick them or they fall off. Does anyone know if I can harvest them while still green? Will they eventually ripen if I do?

Most likely chilling injury and failure to ripen as a result of that injury. Don't pick the green ones - they are difficult to ripen under the best of conditions and if they have been chilled, it's almost impossible.

Ah shoot. Thanks. Guess I'll just have to try again next year!

I usually start them indoors in mid-April and plant out in late May. The head start indoors allows me to harvest ground cherries starting in early August with significant production starting by late August.

I had two Aunt Molly's this year and probably got near 1000 cherries. These are amazing plants. I'm going to try some of the other ground cherry cultivars next year. I had one in a pot and one in ground. In ground did better. The pot got really dry on me while on vacation and the plant was never the same. Produced a while but quite early. The in ground is still producing, although it's getting cold, fruit is smaller now too, strange. No complaints, like a say about 1000 fruits, really a super productive plant! We made 3 pies, eating them in salads and raw, it may have produced 1500, never really counted them. Enough for me and all my neighbors!
