Removing new fruit from citrus

Hi everyone,

I just went and purchased some citrus plants, and being new to gardening was after some advice on how to remove the already formed fruit.

I have a Dwarf Valencia Orange and Meyer Lemon that are rather small plants (less than 70cm) and both have produced fruit. I have read up on it and saw that it is best to remove most (if not all) fruit in the first year to encourage growth.

My question is, what is the best way to do this? Do I just cut it off near the fruit but leave the stem, remove the whole stem or do it about half way? Can I just use normal scissors or is pinching best?

The Lemon also has flowers - can I leave them on or do they have to be removed as well?

Thanks :)
