To my knowledge I've never tasted a Black Republican cherry. Can anyone comment on them? Are they worth growing? Thanks, gary

Since the name of this forum is "Fruit and Orchards", logic would suggest that my question refers to fruit. I am aware that the word "fruit" has been used as a derogatory term for homosexual men but the posts I have read on this forum lead me to believe this is not the intended usage of the word. In any case, I am not aware of any other form of "Black Republican cherry". Perhaps, Mr. Appleseed70 you'd care to enlighten me as to these other forms so that I will not use the term in an inappropriate situation or context and cause embarrassment to myself or others. gary

Here are two interesting articles about the history of "Black Republican" cherry: The Cherry City Black Republican Cherry https://www.slowfoodusa.org/ark-item/black-republican-cherry

Don't take everything so seriously Gary. I was about to make a similar comment to Appleseed, but managed to hold back. Thankfully Weatherman has brought it back on-topic and I now see how it got its name. Per the 2nd link, the grower started the tree in 1860 and was an abolitionist. Since the Republican party was started in 1856 and wanted to stop the spread of slavery (though not strictly abolitionist FWIR), it makes sense that they could choose this as a name. It just sounds strange in today's political climate.

If I were to buy a new cherry tree, I might go for this one as these old time cultivars are around for a reason. Although the new ones out of NY sound very nice. In your area zone 9 you might want the low chill types Zaiger has developed.
