strawberry planter watering

hi guys,
i bought a strawberry planter with 8 holes on the side. it is a pain to water it from the holes since dirt just spills over. and watering from the top drowns the top plants. i've read about inserting a pvc tube with holes into the planter. does that work well?

should i fill the pvc with sand first?

thanks!
jen

RE: strawberry planter watering

From what I have read in books though any large strawberry planter has a holed pipe with gravel in it down the center of the pot.

This is a better question for the container gardening forum people:

Container Forum

My guess is that they will first recommend you change your planting media mix (soil) to something that is looser. Such as Turface, pine bark, etc. to hold the structure and allow water to drain.

Hope this helps!
