I've been growing bud 9 (pomme) trees on trellises for about 7 years now and I have it pretty much down pat. I recently ordered a half dozen trees from Cummins' Nursery on a variety of other supposedly dwarfing rootstocks that I haven't tried before. I'm concerned about vigor and being able to keep the growth controlled on the same trellises that my bud 9 trees are on. I have my bud 9 trees spaced 5 feet apart. (I think there might be some pics on my home page, although they are old pics). I'm excited to finally be getting some trees from Cummins', they seem to be a very professional nursery in all aspects. I'd like to hear your experiences on the following rootstocks and if you think I can plant them on the same 6 foot tall trellises (3 wires) spaced 5 feet apart: G.11

I've grown G11, G16, M9, and M26 in that size range. With your extensive experience I don't think you'll have any issues due to rootstock vigor. Amongst those it's more to do with scion vigor. I haven't seen much difference due to root. They all settle down and fruit at a young age.

I've got several each of G11 and B9 which are 4 years old. The G11 are noticeably larger than the B9. The oldest G16 I have is about the same as the G11. In my more recent purchases, I have M9 and G41, but it is still early to say. They haven't put on massive growth, and from what I've read they should be similar to B9. G202 is supposed to be a bit bigger than G11, so I haven't added any of it.

Thomis, I have around 25 trees on G-11 and G-16 from Cummins that are at the end of their 2nd season. They are at 5 foot spacing and even with pretty severe branch bending, have about grown together and are start it to touch. I will admit that I'm a new grower and frequently threw handfuls of 10-10-10 around the trees during the growing season which now realize is not a good idea. My new order from Cummins arriving this week on G-41 is going in at 6 spacing. Chris
