I'm setting up a 95' long berry patch, both blackberry and raspberry (summer and fall plants). But section of the row is currently occupied by garlic planted this fall. I do not want to transplant them yet if I do not have to. The garlic will be harvest in June or July. The plants are considered one year plants even some have short 2nd year canes. I understand that the blackberry (TC and Black Satin) growth can be robust. Also, the Heritage raspberry should fruit this fall. So they do need support. The trellis I have planned is a light-weight grape type trellis. Two end posts, some metal or wood line posts. I'm thinking about setting some 8' metal posts. But if I set some 4x4 end posts, they may be hard to be removed to the permanent location. The main headache is the wires. If I re-do the trellis, then the wires have to re-done. Or I waste the wires. Any temporary wiring I can do?

Well you could use stakes by the plants. Tie them to the stakes for support till the trellis is up. I have a dozen of them or more. Mostly for tomato plants.
|
The good thing is that, I only have 1/2 of the plants needed to fill the trellis. So I'll be planting the plants with double the final spacing. Then add or propagate for next year. Staking is one way, but the canes have to tied together. Maybe I can get some nylon ropes and tie one just one string to the middle of the metal posts to hold the vines.100' long rope does not cost much. And I can tie all the canes up.

With red and yellows, suckers will spread quickly. Blackberries and black raspberries you will need to tip root to create more crowns. The reds don't need any help. They can sucker over 8 feet away from mother plant. You will end up always pulling strays out. I tell them which way to sucker, but they ignore me.

Triple Crown will create plenty of new plants too. As Drew notes, it is through tip-rooting, but it will do so without any action on your part. In fact, you'll need to pay attention to keep it from tip rooting. This is especially true during the first growing season, as the growth tends to be less vertical.

Yes, the same with my Black Satin. It crawled on the ground and I let it tip rooted.... I can do the same with TC. So I can get a few more plants to fill the trellis.
