Hi, anyone growing arctic, 'super-hardy' kiwi- actinidia kolomikta? We got our first fruit from a 'Red Beauty' vine, delicious but tiny, now I'm looking at some of the larger fruiting varieties. Anyone growing 'september sun', 'kruplodonaya', 'victor' and get to try fruit from them? How long to before they bear fruit?

I have Viktor and a couple September Suns. I don't have access to my records just now, but it seems it was around three years before the Viktor bore fruit. It is delicious. The September Suns were smaller plants, so haven't born yet. I also have an Emerald that has born fruit. The fruits are about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, and being green, the birds didn't bother them (yet). The yields aren't very high yet, but a nice change of pace from apples, strawberries, and blueberries, my other producing fruits. Northwoodswis

Where did you get those plants?

Again, I don't have access to my records, but I believe Emerald, Pascha, and Viktor were from One Green World. (They were very nice plants, well packed.) The others that haven't bloomed were from Gurneys, and possibly one from Jungs. They are all fairly tough plants, as they are growing in poor, sandy soil and we had dry conditions in late summer for three years in a row.
I wasn't expecting much after the brutal winter, but it didn't seem to phase them. Northwoodswis

I have a few kolomokita varieties, September sun and krumpnopladynaya and a bunch of numbered selections from the Czech republic. I got fruit the first year from the named varieties. the numbered selections were cuttings planted 2013 just sticks in the ground..... hopefully get fruit next year from them as they are very precocious.
I have been getting fruit from the krup and September sun since the first year they were planted.Fruit is very sweet better than any store bought big brown fuzzy you can get IMO.

Glenn, I was hoping you'd chime in, I remember some photos you posted of some great looking fruit awhile back. Where did your Czech plants come from?

JesseSt you may want to check out what edible landscaping has to offer for hardy kiwi.

Here is a link that might be useful: kiwi

Clark, those are all actinidia arguta at EL, hardy kiwi, not actinidia kolomikta, arctic or super hardy kiwi. I've chosen to focus on the kolomiktas because they seem to be less rampant than the argutas and also more precocious in fruiting. There's only a three improved fruiting females in trade that I've been able to locate, and Glenn mentions a couple -September Sun, Kruplodonaya, and Viktor.

Jesse,
September Sun can be purchased from edible landscaping if you decide to go that route http://ediblelandscaping.com/products/vines/KiwisRussian/SeptemberSunFemaleKolomiktaKiwi.php

I watched this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUOqlCL8bYw and can see several of the advantages now over Actinidia arguta that you had pointed out. I've only grown arguta and only for a couple of years before the drought got them. I watered twice per day and they needed more water than that.
