Minimum pear tree spacing

Considering (1) that most have rootstocks that give standard size (Callery pear), (2) plenty of room will be given between rows (~20 feet), and (3) while I want to produce a fair amount of fruit, the planting is more as an experiment in this climate and degree of care, with many different selections, and is not made for maximum production:

What would be the minimum spacing you would put between trees within the rows?

Sandy soil, boundary of zones 7/8, if those make any difference.

If you have room for 20ft rows, I'd leave about 8ft between trees minimum. Could you go less, sure but why. I'd put the rows closer before going less than 8ft.

I'm with The Fruitnut - I've got mine in rows 20 ft apart, with 20 ft spacings in the row, but think I'll come back and stick another tree in between - I believe 10-ft spacings in the row is probably OK - 8 might be even better if I was starting from scratch.

Thanks both. I would not dared have gone that close in just guessing on my own, but it sure will help in terms of space.
