Quite some of the buds on my Minnie Royal and Royal Lee cherry tree are showing some pink or even green tip. It's not even winter yet. Is that normal for this time?

It's not normal for established trees. I usually don't see that until late January or early February. My Minnie Royal and Royal Lee are going on their fifth growing season. Your trees are probably confused by the alternating warm and cold weather we have been having the last few weeks in San Diego. As they mature they will be less affected by the erratic weather we get in fall and winter.

Well, not so unusual for very, very low chill stone and pomes, especially younger trees and especially if you're very close to the coast (I'm actually basically saying the same thing as Tom is saying). Normally this is more frequently seen with some of the very low chill apples, like Anna and Golden Dorsett, which can have a second crop in the winter if temps are warm enough. Even some of my buds on my Royal Lee are showing a tiny bit of pink, and my two are going on 4 years old: Things should stay closed until next spring, though, and if not, more buds should form for you. Where are you in SD county? Patty S.

Patty I am surprised that your cherry trees look completely different than mine this time of year. Minnie Royal is completely defoliated and Royal Lee has mostly pale yellow/green leaves that are ready to drop. Neither has buds swelling like yours. Tom

Thanks Tom and Patty. I just planted my trees last winter and there were a few cool nights in the past few weeks. So, this should be OK. Even if they started growing, frost damage in the winter should be low here around Rancho Bernardo area. And two of my blueberry bushes start flowering already.
