Hi All, I just ordered several bare root fruit trees (2 apple, peach, plum, apricot) to be planted in January in the Phoenix area. These trees are going in an area of the yard that had a large empty koi pond when we moved in. After a little work it's now a large hole around 12" deep. So my question is, what's the best thing to put in the hole to plant the trees in? Native dirt, good compost, soil, sand, etc. I've done much research but it seems like there are so many options. Cost doesn't matter a whole lot since I hope to have these trees for many many years and want to give them the best life! Thanks for any suggestions.

I'd go with excess topsoil from your yard if available. Otherwise buy a load of good topsoil. It doesn't need anything other than that. And allow for an inch or two of settling after it's planted. My soil settles at least an inch over a year or two after planting and watering heavily. The deeper the initial hole the more it will settle.

Match the surrounding soil as closely as possible. You can create drainage or moisture issues if the soil in the planting hole is different than the surrounding soil. For example, if the surrounding soil is clay, and the planting hole is compost or sand based, you can create a bathtub effect and drown the roots.

This is as easy as it can get! Thanks for taking the time to help out.

If you can take native soil from other areas, then do that and then buy fill to replace that instead.
