Growing 'semi dwarf' apples without size restrictions...

Besides pruning for general early shape training, dead diseased and damaged wood, and crossovers etc, is there much trouble with allowing these trees to grow to a "natural" height and width? Will they crop more or less?
I am aware that fruit will be higher than would be ideal, but much of the fruit will be used as livestock feed so windfalls are not an issue.
Would appreciate any pros and cons of this, if you have tried it at all. Thanks! |

| As long as you make sure it has a strong central leader you can just let the trees go. Most varieties will usually grow into beautiful trees. I strongly prefer absolutely neglected trees to those that have been pruned in ignorance and some of the most beautiful apple trees I've ever seen may never have been pruned. Of course such a tree will produce fewer and smaller apples and they will be concentrated on the outside of the tree. |
