Unexplained fruit tree disease...

I moved into my home in 1990. At that time the only fruit trees were a yellow plum and a fig. Since then I have planted apples, peaches, pears, plums, etc. The original yellow plum trees no longer produce, but before they stopped, they got infected by something.

The disease manifests itself like this on plum trees: While the plums are green, I see small brown spots on them that appear to be entry places for something. I say this because if I cut open a plum, a brown trail is seen that goes to the pit.

Then, a clear sticky substance comes out of the spots, and it hardens into small balls on the plum surface. I can also see accumulations of this same substance on areas of the tree limbs. I have tried every spray that I can buy, without success. Anyone know what this is and how to kill it?
