blueberry blooming now

Hi guys,
I have a Sunshine Blue blueberry in a pot, and for the last 2 weeks the flowers have bloomed. Since its November, do you think they will turn into blueberries? Usually how long does it take the blueberries to form after the flower appears?

Southern CA weather is still pretty warm...do you think that's tricking my blueberry plant to thinking its spring?

Thanks,
Jen

Jen: The low chill types, actually almost no chill, bloom for me starting in October. Southmoon, Primadonna, and Misty are blooming now outside and in my greenhouse. These three have almost no chilling requirement to bloom and they keep their leaves all winter unless it gets pretty cold.

I don't know if Sunshine Blue falls in this category. The fruit set pretty soon after bloom. But fruit that sets this time of yr usually hasn't ripened to good quality. I think it's not warm enough. However I'd leave it and see what you get. The plant will probably keep blooming until Febr or March. Fruit that sets next yr will likely be better.

Thanks Fruitnut! I believe Sunshine Blue is a low chill variety too. I'll keep my eye out for berries then!

I hope you guys don't mind me jumping into the conversation. My question to anyone tapping in is "Is there a way to make your blueberries sweeter?"

KennyB from Hawaii!

KennyB: Reducing the amount of water you apply can make bb somewhat sweeter. The same is true for most fruit. You can also leave them on the bush a little longer. Also, having too many fruit on the bush can make them less sweet. So prune to reduce the crop or thin.

What varieties are you growing there with no chilling? Some varieties are sweeter than others. Inadequate foliage due to inadequate chilling will result in fruit with no sweetness.

The Fruitnut,

Thanks for responding and providing me with some good advice. I'm growing Jewel, Emerald, and Sharp Blue. The Emerald and Sharp Blue are blooming right now. I just got the other one. I started growing them because of the interest it received from the University of Hawaii. You see, there is a big push to grow other fruits here in Hawaii other than the tropical fruits that do well here.

At this time, I have a Florida Prince peach tree, a Dorsett Golden Apple, a Santa Ana apple and blueberries. All are growing well and producing fruit. The peaches and apples are small though but very sweet. I also grow Ruby Red Grapefruit, Mandarin Oranges, Mountain Apples, bananas and papayas.

Thanks again,

Kenny B

Kenny B: Very interesting. Sharpblue is a very low chill variety. I haven't grown Jewel or Emerald but did taste them in California. It will be interesting to see how long they will produce with no chilling. You might want to try Southmoon if you can find it. For me it appears to need no chilling to flower. But here I can't grow it without it getting a fair amount of chilling. The reason I mention it is that it is a high quality variety. But in my opinion and experience, blueberries are not a really high quality fruit. They are just a nice change in pace.

Please keep posting. Many people will be interested in whether your blueberries keep producing.
