Black Currant Diseases?

Posted by westy1941 z5 NO IL (cdwestg@att.net) on

My cousin in northern Minnesota is growing black currants but this summer they got some kind of disease. Are there specific diseases that are indigenous to this fruit tree?

Any help would be much appreciated.

We have a red currant shrub, not a black currant. It gets a brown tinge on some of the leaves, which is described as a "rust" type disease. I think that the same pathogen affects pine trees. In some places, it is illegal to grow currants, in order to keep the pine forest healthy. I am not a plant pathologist, so this is just preliminary information that you might find useful as you explore the subject further. For what its worth, there are a few pine trees in our neighborhood, and they look fine to me.

RE: Black Currant Diseases?

Thanks for the info, ericwi. I know she brought these seeds back from Norway a couple of years ago - she lives way up in the woods and I don't think anyone will even see them - if these are illegal! I'll have to tell her about that. I'm familiar with 'rust' diseases. And black currants can't be that different from red....so thanks again.
