A good fruit day, how was yours

Sometimes this site gets a little slow and boring so forgive me if this is a little too much bragging. But today I ate my first tangerine and last watermelon. The tangerine was pretty tart but also sweet enough to be good. The watermelon was good especially since our first frost was three weeks ago. I must have eaten 400 lbs of actual watermelon this summer. By far my best crop for yield and quality.

Also am still eating Crimson seedless grapes and have ~40 bunches left. Ate the last pluot last week. Had dried pluot and blueberries today. And my Primadonna and Southmoon are blooming quite a bit. Hope to have fresh blueberries by March.

Also had the last sweetcorn today. It was still good. Had sweetcorn from nine plantings that lasted from June 20 till now. I got a bit tired of it at times but it was a very sweet variety called Miari 301.

And finally topped off the day with a Pink Lady apple, small but very tasty.

Only thing going up here still is broccoli and cabbage... Lowest temp around here has been 25F and that has happened 3 times.

You really have a sweet tooth! I've seen navel oranges from Texas at the store, although i haven't tried them yet.

You ever eat dark chocolate? You should grow cocoa!

I noticed the grapes at the grocery store from California are HUGE right now...like the size of small plums.

All my sweets are fruits and vegetables. Was just looking at the catalogs trying to figure out if I want to try carrots, cabbage, and Kale or chard. They can be grown here year around although you won't think so right now...30F and falling fast. But it won't stay cold long and has been a good fall so far.

Carrots work well here. You can get a couple crops if you do it right. I've dug them up in December under the snow...they turn very sweet with that cold weather.

I'm guessing your elevation is what keeps you chillier then other parts of TX?... If i recall, your not too far from the Mexican border? BBC was in Juarez tonite...yikes! Just keep the mangoes and avocados coming north! speaking of which, you don't grow mangoes in that greenhouse do you?

Interesting climate there.

Here in Michigan, I have some not yet fully ripened Meader persimmons. And, some Korean Giant pears hanging on at the top of the tree, which is now leafless. And a few windfall apples that I will probably pick up and feed to the chickens.

We've had a cold yet oddly mild October (coldest night was 29 degrees, but days were cold, mostly cloudy and rainy), followed by a warm and quite nice November that looks to hold on for at least another week. A few remnant vegetables hanging on if I really wanted to bother with them. I guess I could always grub in the dirt for Jerusalem artichokes, garlic. There are always leeks and herbs.

My best harvest this month has been other peoples' leaves. I picked up 346 bags last weekend. I hope to get at least another 100 more this week, if I can beat the yard waste pickup trucks to them. I'm trying to get exclusively oak, since I don't have any in my yard to speak of, they don't rot very fast, and they don't mat down like maple and many other leaves do. Great way to mulch everything for free. And, I sure won't run out of lawn and leaf bags for next year's garden cleanup and pruning.

Ya Frank at 4500 ft elevation we're much cooler than downstate Texas. It dropped to about 20 last night. But greenhouse held at 33F.

I haven't tried Mango or avocado. Much prefer citrus which do great and are easy to grow. I really need to try carrots.

denninmi: You seem to have a big operation and lots of ambition!! I still have Eureka persimmon and Pink Lady apples on the tree outside. Will see how they fared at 20F. I've been really impressed with Eureka but it never seems to come up in discussions here.

Well, fruitnut, I don't know if I'd call it ambition or obsession, but it's a relatively benign vice compared to many others I could have.

As I said recently (more or less) in another thread, being addicted to gardening keeps me off the streets and out of the bars.

Not much happening in my orchard but I did eat 5 or 6 apples off my nursery trees including Braebern, Fuji and Goldrush. I don't think I've ever pulled fruit off quite this late. I also ate a couple of Kousa dogwood fruit which sere surprisingly good. My morning started off with frozen blueberries (my freezer is full of them) and Roxbury Russet apple pieces over waffles. Pretty good fruit day for late Nov. in the northeast. I'll have frozen blueberries, fresh apples and pear and peach preserves all winter.

Anxiously awaiting picking my first Satsumas. They are so bright orange now but I like to get a few cold nights on them to sweaten them up. Tonight could do it as its supposed to freeze lightly. Still getting tomatoes and peppers and still pulling pears out of the fridge. Not sure if I'll make preserves this year as I still have several jars of pear-pecan butter from last year! All in all not a bad day.

Scape: Those Satsumas are outside, right? How cold have they taken with limited damage? What do you think of the quality? Wish I had room for more citrus. We were 21F last night...too cold for even Satsumas I think.

I ate the first pummelo today. It was fully ripe and as good as always. My navels are not quite fully orange yet. Not enough cold weather so far.

I just had my first truly ripe Violette de Bordeaux fig, and it was something special. Had no idea that they would come in this late. It was a sweet, fragrant and velvety taste explosion. The tree is still a twig in its 1st year, so I am hoping for some decent production in the years to come.

Navel oranges, Meyer lemons and Page mandarins are starting to show some color as well. That all adds up to a pretty nice fruit day.

Yes my Sats are outside. I also have some in pots inside my make shift greenhouse. The outside ones (Miho,Owari) have taken down to 25-20 many times but never for very long. Last year they sat with ice on them for several hours but the temps never got below 30. I think that 21 degrees for more than a few hours would be devastating but even if you draped a frost cloth over them they would likely make it as they seem to be pretty darn hardy. I dont really heat my greenhouse even on the coldest days. I do however fill milkjugs with water and dangle them from the roof of the gh in the canopy of the trees it actually keeps my little gh warm enough for all kinds of citrus at least so far. My Navels are not ready yet either neither are my Mars but maybe soon.
