I just purchased a Spur Arkansas Black grafted onto rootstock 7. Tree size apparently gets complex when you mix spur varieties and different roots. My question is what to expect for a mature tree size of this tree. I also have a few different roots that I can graft to if the size meets my needs. M111, M26, or Bud9. Any and all comments are welcome.

I don't know what Ark spur is or if it is actually different than straight Ark Black, which is as precocious and spurry a strain as I would want. You can add to the complexity the nature of the soil and access to water, as well as your unique weather, so it would be difficult to give you a specific answer. I prefer it on 111 to 7 because 7 doesn't give me good anchorage until well after the first heavy cropping. Doesn't do as good a job of finding water when establishing either. Even on 111 if begins bearing almost as quickly as Goldrush.

Stark sells spur just about anything and I have resisted ordering any because I wasn't sure if they were actually different from the "normal" varieties. Since you know the root stock I imagine you are not getting it from Stark as they don't seem to know what their root stock is. Maybe if you talk to the right person there, but I apparently never have. Chuck

Thanks H-Man and Chuck. Your post prompted me to do a little reading on the Spur Arkansas Black apple and the best rootstock. The more I read the more I like the M111 root. Several places indicate that there are mutations of the Arkansas Black that resulted in the spur. Assuming this is correct looks like I will be better off having it on the M111 root. Auburn University has this listing. Although Stark offers a spur this tree was purchased locally. Thanks again for your help. ANR-1138
