| I have some trees on MM111 that I want to plant on a 6 ft, 3 wire Trellis. Before researching thoroughly, I had decided MM111 would be the best option because it would require little or no irrigation. The orchard site is on excellent soil and I worry the vigor of MM111 will get out of control down the road. I suppose I will plant most of the high vigor cultivars on MM111 as free standing trees. I am still going to plant out some of the MM111 on my 3 wire Trellis and see what happens. I guess my questions is what the in-row spacing should be for medium vigor MM111 on a 6' Trellis? |

| I've never done it personally but have heard of a method of trunk banding to limit growth. Maybe someone else can give some advice on that. MM111 get very large if they are allowed to. |

| I think you will need about 20 foot spacing between trees as a pure guess. It is unusual to select espalier rootstock for drought resistance but how the trees react will depend a lot on the cultivar, as you've already considered. It will also depend a lot on your skill as a pruner as far as discouraging vegetative growth in favor of fruiting. The majority of espalier pruning is generally done during summer, which helps control vigor. |
