In zone 6 you should plant them outdoors now. You can't cut back on water to force dormancy. That will kill them. They need chilling in order to leaf out next spring.

I'd plant outside or bury the pots outside and cover with screen to keep out critters.

So you don't think planting them outside when this little will kill these young seedlings? Or could I plant them and insulate the area around their base? Thanks for the info.

No planting outside, assuming they've been outside up to now won't kill them. In natural conditions trees that small over winter all the time. It's indoors in unnatural conditions that's more likely to kill them. They might die outdoors but are more likely to die indoors.

I plan to grow some from seed too, but will start them in the ground. Or If grown in winter, put in the ground in the spring even if only 1 inch tall. You should have planted them this last spring. I would wait till this cold fromt breaks and plant them. I would put them back outside too. Let the cold kill the leaves. Hopefully they have not been inside long.
