Girdling or wire strapping Kakis

A Japanese journal article I just finished reading mentions girdling and strapping Asian persimmons to reduce fruit drop of unfertilized fruit and to improve fruit quality. Has anyone here had personal experience with these techniques on persimmon or other fruit trees? If so how does one keep from accidently killing said tree or limb in the process?
