Cherry Blossom Bark Splitting

Hi, I am new to this forum and really appreciate your help :)

I have two cherry blossom trees which have this green mold like thing growing on the branches. Also the branches are splitting.

Could someone help me with diagnosing the problem. I read about frost damage but I live in north California where it doesn't get too cold.

I really love the trees and wanted to know if I could do anything to prevent further damage for both the issues
1. Green mold like substance on branches
2. Splitting of branches

Otherwise the leafes/flower are healthy

Thanks in advance :)

The green stuff is algae or lickens. Not serious at all.

Bark splitting is serious but damage already there can't be repaired. It's also hard to prevent. You might check out bacterial canker at UC Davis pest management website.

I was thinking possible sun damage for the bark splitting. It has to be very bad to get that much splitting due to sun overexposure though.

Thanks for the response. I read about sun damage but the trees don't get that much sun(its covered by the house).

Is there anything that can be done to get rid of the algae/lickens?

Also read about the cracker but seems like there isn't any effective cure :(

Any suggestions are welcome.

yeah spooler that tree looks really bad. Some fungicides reportedly take care of the lichen. Copper does, but as others have said it supposedly does no harm to the tree and some claim it is beneficial. Lack of sunlight exposure might be the root of it.
