New Henry Fields catalog came and on the cover is the RazzMatazz Grape... on sale for $97.99.. World's first continuous fruiting variety? Instead of setting fruit just once in the summer, this grape will flower and fruit over and over again from summer until frost... ??? Its a muscadine crossed with a seedless table grape. Zone 7-9

Too rich for my blood...

Price has gone up, now $99.99!! Better buy now.

Doesn't ripen until September. So what good is the later fruit? Not much unless it stays hot all winter.

RE: $98 grape vine?

The "sale" price is on the catalog front page... Not sure how big of a breakthrough this is...need a very long growing season.

 o
RE: $98 grape vine?

I'd rather pay that amount of money for a fruit that has its season but is unusual. The idea that we can have that grape more than once kind of takes the fun out of seasonal fruit. I'd rather buy a rare peach or plum. Just my two cents. Mrs. G

Interesting.....not sure it is $98 worth of interesting though. It would be nice to have fresh home grown grapes in December and January.

 o
RE: $98 grape vine?

Too expensive for me.

But a continuous-fruiting grape would be nice for a yard with kids.

There's no data on this grape: RazzMatazz Grape.

If it's a new variety, shouldn't there at least be patent info?

$100 would be a fair value if it lived up to the marketing claims (no spray, multi-harvest, excellent quality, etc).

Normal bunch grapes often put on small late clusters. You can force more late clusters by summer pruning. But the quality of that late fruit is usually subpar. There isn't enough heat, light, and season length to ripen the late fruit.

I've got grapes now that I can harvest from July thru November, Flame, Summer Royal, Princess, and Crimson. I've held Crimson into February. So where's the advantage of this grape? I don't see it and the eating quality is probably inferior.

But I might try it at a reasonable price of say $20. I bet they'll have a sale in the spring. How many people will pay $98?

 o
RE: $98 grape vine?

This is the third or fourth muscadine and bunch-grape hybrid I've seen for sale in the past few years (though one of them, "Southern Home," has been available for quite a while).

Reminds me of a phrase: "theres a sucker born every minute".

I will have to pass on this one.

RE: $98 grape vine?

Even in areas with a long enough season to benefit from grapes that ripen past September, I fail to see the great advantage. I have picked golden Thompson Seedless grapes that were still juicy and crazy sweet in mid-winter in Venice CA. In drier climates grapes can hold onto the vine until they turn into raisins, which apparently can take quite a while.

RE: $98 grape vine?

I wonder how they taste. I personally can't stand the taste of muscadines. Even though I'm growing three varieties of them, they are for my wife who loves them. I'd imagine even a crossed variety would have enough of a muscadine taste for me not to like them.

Rob,

Try Nesbitt, tastes identical to a concord.

RE: $98 grape vine?

Catalog says 99.99$ crossed out with 97.99$ limited time hurry. Is that 2% off (a 100$ product) gonna be the catalyst to get this sold? Strangest sale I've ever seen...

Exactly - how does it taste? If a muscadine cross, I doubt if I'd pay 99 cents for it.

Now I'd pay $99 for a Red Flame vine that could survive subzero here in N IL.

RE: $98 grape vine?

If you are raised with muscadines you love the flavor and especially aroma, and tolerate the texture.

There is one selection informally released intentionally because it had far less of the muscadine fragrance, so that southern winemakers could make a more-typical grape wine: "Golden Isles"

I have sought high and low, and still unsuccessfully, for a mail-order source.

 o
RE: $98 grape vine?

Golden Isle has been scraped a long time read at bottom link.

Here is a link that might be useful: Golden Isles grapes

I'd bet 9 of 10 people would gag or at least spit and sputter if they tasted this thing.

bamboo, I was considering Nesbitt when I was doing research on muscadine varieties, but went with other choices. I did read good things about them, but went with others that had a higher sugar content.

gonebananas, I agree. My wife was raised in Georgia and she (and all of her family) love them. I had never heard of them until I started going to Georgia. I don't like the smell either. Smells just like motor oil to me.

 o
RE: $98 grape vine?

"Golden Isles" was not released formally because it was not thought worthy enough for commercial vineyard culture. It is still widely recommended for or by home wine-making backyard growers, which is why I want to obtain it.

I never heard of "Nesbitt" as being less muscadine-like and will have to look into it too.

I personally love muscadines in all its food forms (from fresh off the vine to hull pie and wine) but one of the most memorable was a fragrant sweet syrup for pancakes or waffles. I similarly like the fragrant syrup from tropical passionfruit (lilicoi).

 o
RE: $98 grape vine?

Fruitnut is right. I've had wine grapes do two crops, and it amazes me, but some do it. And the second flush is never as good as the primary flush.

Anything new can have a big price, but sooner or later, cuttings will abound, and it can be had for cheap!

It's not just those who were raised with muscadines who like them. I tried them for the first time last year and liked them enough that I planted 4 vines this fall (Late Fry, Fry Seedless, Supreme, and Black Beauty). I'm not sure how they'll do in my hardiness zone (borderline 7...), but I think they'll be fine this year, as the vines were still small enough for me to cover with hay (not an option in future years).

They aren't that easy to find in the grocery store- I've only encountered them twice (a bronze variety last year and a black one this year). I'd really love to find grapes with the huge size, taste, and sugar level (17% on the black ones this year) without the seeds. The texture wasn't a problem for me.
